Harold "George" Bauer

Harold "George" Bauer, 81, a resident of Butler, Pennsylvania for over 60 years, passed away on July 24, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia in Cabot.

He was born February 25, 1934 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania to the late Harold J. Bauer and Hazel Loretta (May) Bauer.

Mr. Bauer was a graduate of Connellsville School District and went on to major in Music at West Virginia University. He worked for Pullman Standard and retired from County of Butler. Mr. Bauer loved his work at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot, where he delivered mail, provided music therapy at his keyboard and sang. He would go from building to building and enjoyed making the residents smile! He was also known as the "shoeshine man" as he took great pleasure shining resident's shoes. Mr. Bauer was a member of the Community Alliance Church, where he was a former member of the choir, the Bach Chorale, A.C.T.S. Choir and the Butler Photography Club. He was a life member of the US Chess Federation and was the president and founder of the Butler Chess Club in the late 1960's. Mr. Bauer was a member of the Butler Poetry group "Caps For Kids" and volunteered for chapel services, playing piano and singing, at Butler VA Hospital for many years. He loved music, chess, photography and games. Spending time with family and friends was his greatest joy!

Mr. Bauer is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Jean "Betty" (Ghent) Bauer, whom he married June 11, 1955; one daughter, Loretta Jean "Lori" Fry and her husband Kevin of Butler, PA; one son, Christopher Ross Bauer of Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren, Ryan Wable, Joshua Fry and Jessica (Fry) Moore; one great-grandchild, Lyllian Fry; and two sisters, Jennie Ruth and her husband Dean of Connellsville, PA and Lois Vincent and her husband Larry of Boonsville, VA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Timothy K. Bauer.

Friends will be received Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA. A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Reverend Dr. Dennis L. Krajacic of Community Alliance Church officiating.
