Pauline M. "Polly" Black

Pauline M. Black, “Polly,” 88, of Butler, passed away on Monday afternoon at Concordia Good Samaritan Hospice after a short illness.


The daughter of the late John W. P. Mitchell and Sarah Christiana Simpson Mitchell, Polly was born August 13th, 1922, in Gates County, North Carolina.


She was a member of Nixon United Methodist Church in Penn Township. Polly graduated from East Carolina Teacher’s College and taught high school chemistry in North Carolina. During World War II, she worked at the Pentagon as a cryptologist for Signal Corps. She was instrumental in the creation of kindergarten classes in the Butler School District in the late 1950s. Polly participated in the Intermediate League as chair of the antique show and volunteered with both the Hospital Auxiliary and Sunnyview. After raising her children, Polly worked as an office assistant to Dr. Ernest E. Moore in Butler. One of Polly’s greatest interests was Duplicate Bridge, at which she succeeded in becoming a Life Master. She loved spending time with her family, playing Scrabble, and helping her neighbors at The Orchard.
 

Polly is survived by her three children: Susan (David) Campbell of Maketu, New Zealand; Christine (Earl) Taylor of Butler; and Arthur (Janet) Black, III of Renfrew; and four grandchildren, Dylan (Amey Hutchins) Steinberg of Philadelphia; Joshua Taylor of Butler; Erin Black of Gallup, NM; and Arthur Black, IV of Bloomington, IN. She is also survived by one brother, William P. Mitchell, and by many nieces and nephews.
 

Polly was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mildred Rountree and Doris Weaver.
 

Friends will be received Wednesday, July 20, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA 16001. Funeral Service will be held immediately following at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Bruce Merritt of Nixon United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be at Northside Cemetery.
